YELLOW FEVER
A disease spread through mosquito bites which can cause nausea, vomiting and generalised muscle pain. Around 60% of patients infected with yellow fever will die.
The disease is present in parts of Central and South America and Sub-Saharan Africa.
A certificate which acts as proof of vaccination against yellow fever is a requirement to be granted entry into certain countries.

RABIES
A disease spread through the infected bite or scratch of a rabid animal, commonly bats or dogs (though also monkeys and cats in some areas). Patients will almost certainly die if they become infected with the disease.
Rabies is present all across the world and travellers planning to visit areas and engage in outdoor activities where they are likely to come into contact with wild animals should get the rabies vaccine.

TYHPOID
A disease spread by bacteria in food and drink contaminated with human faeces or urine. Symptoms include confusion, headache, constipation & diarrhoea and can be fatal if not treated in a timely manner.
Mostly present in Africa, South America & South-East Asia here there are generally poor levels of sanitation and hygiene and limited access to clean water.

A disease of the liver caused by ingestion of contaminated food & water and direct contact with an infectious person. Symptoms include stomach upset, nausea & vomiting.
This disease is present worldwide especially in areas of poor hygiene and sanitation.

HEPATITIS B
A disease of the liver caused by contact with blood or bodily fluids of an infectious person. Symptoms include stomach upset, vomiting & diarrhoea. Could lead to liver failure which may prove to be fatal.
Mostly present in Sub-Saharan Africa and East Asia.

DTP (DIPHTHERIA, TETANUS, POLIO)
All three diseases can lead to serious health complications including paralysis and death.
These diseases are present worldwide. Although the DTP vaccine is part of the childhood immunisation programme, a booster dose is recommended every 10 years.

A bacterial infection caused by drinking contaminated water. Symptoms include stomach cramps, vomiting and watery diarrhoea and can be fatal if untreated.

JAPANESE ENCAPHALITIS
Caused by mosquito bites leading to a viral brain infection. The disease could lead to lifelong complications and paralysis and mainly affects children under 14. There is also a high fatality rate.
Mostly present in South-East Asia and Western Pacific region.

TICK-BORNE ENCAPHALITIS
A disease caused by tick bites or by drinking unpasteurised milk of an infected animal. Symptoms include headache and muscle pain and can develop to brain damage and paralysis.
Mostly present in rural areas of Europe, Eastern Russia and East Asia with those hiking or engaging in outdoor activities most at risk.
