Meningitis is not just limited to travellers to Saudi. It is spread through sneezing, coughing and saliva of an infected person and is common in 23 countries all the way across Sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Ethiopia.

It is also highly recommended for students going to university or college for the first time, including overseas and mature students, who have not yet had the MenACWY vaccine. Older teenagers and new university students are at higher risk of infection because many of them mix closely with lots of new people, some of whom may unknowingly carry the meningococcal bacteria at the back of their noses and throats.

Meningitis can be fatal if contracted. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, stiff neck and intense headache. Meningitis infects the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, causing them to become inflamed and this can consequently lead to brain/nerve damage which can be fatal.
